Federer binding level after Golubev of Kazakhstan interfere with Wawrinka
GENEVA - Roger Federer eased to victory over Mikhail Kukushkin on Friday , bringing the Swiss level at 1-1 with Kazakhstan in the Davis Cup quarterfinals .
Federer 6-4 , 6-4 , win in less than two hours in order to be restored to 15,000 Swiss fans who saw Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka surprisingly lost the first singles match 6-2 .
Wawrinka , ranked No. 3 after a first Grand Slam title , was beaten 7-6 ( 5 ) , 6-2 , 3-6 , 7-6 ( 5 ) by the 64th - ranked Andrey Golubev .
Federer and Wawrinka , doubles champion at the 2008 Beijing Olympics , is scheduled to work Saturday against dual Kazakh pair Evgeny Korolev and Aleksandr Nedovyesov .
" This weekend has not been completed , " Federer said in a courtside interview after defeating 56 - ranked Kukushkin . " I served well and played a solid game . "
The winner will face England or Italy in the semi-finals in September .
Switzerland aims to reach his first semifinal since 2003 in the first Davis Cup title chase .
Wawrinka received a huge ovation stepping on the field at the Palexpo indoor arena for his first match in Switzerland since become a Grand Slam champion in January .
